About the Artist — Martha Kuper Brinson

Someone once told me while looking at my paintings, “You must have a happy heart.”  Not only was this one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me, it made me realize that I paint what I feel, as much as or more than what I see.  If I try to paint when I am troubled, the paintings just don’t work for me. My watercolors come from the spirit of the moment.  My subjects include seaside and country scenes, botanical illustrations and shell studies, fantasy pieces and abstracts.  I offer originals only, no prints.

My time is split between our cottage on Topsail Island and our home in the Green Level community near Raleigh, North Carolina.  I enjoy playing bluegrass fiddle, studying 18th Century open hearth cooking, collecting cookbooks and trying out recipes, making Eastern North Carolina style barbecue over hardwoods in my pig cooker, traveling, and spending time with my husband, family, and pets (Border terriers Rascal and Sally, and Roger the striped wonder-cat).

Every single day of my life, I try to surprise someone in some nice way, whether it is a lifelong friend or a total stranger.  I try every day to help someone who needs me and to give more than I take.  I hope you enjoy my paintings, and if you take one home with you, please know that it was painted with a happy heart.
